Hardwiring Fairness for All: Now and for Future Generations

Article

On 25th June 2024, Social Change Initiative hosted its Hardwiring Fairness Conference, where guests from diverse backgrounds – including civic society, activism, voluntary sector and government – had the opportunity to hear more about the Welsh Well-being of Future Generations Act, how governments worldwide are implementing legislative models to reduce inequalities and improve wellbeing and how these practices can be adopted in Northern Ireland.

SCI’s Deputy Director Padraic Quirk shared his thoughts about the event:

People in the room saw a huge potential to transform our public services and improve the lives of the most disadvantaged. There was a strong feeling that  change is needed, and that action must be taken, and we can make a difference by learning from other places and adapting their practices to our own context – it's about delivery, collaboration, and incorporating better ideas from all of our sectors.

To address the question, "How do we hardwire fairness now and for future generations into public policy and decision making in Northern Ireland?" SCI published a short report with a summary and key takeaways from the event, which can be accessed below.

At SCI, we understand the importance of creating spaces like this—to listen, learn, and think about our futures. We are committed to playing  our full part in supporting efforts to hardwire fairness and sustainability into public policies and systems. We invite you to continue the conversation and help move the vision of reducing inequalities and improving well-being to a lived reality for everyone.
